Background

The inaugural joint youth and academic conference on Youth, media and democracy, At DIT and Digital Hub, Dublin, 18 and 19 April 2008

There is a growing recognition of the many different ways that Media and New Technology can contribute to, or transform, the activities, roles, and relationships experienced by children and youth. The inaugural conference ‘Youth Media Democracy’ sets out to explore the effects that new media have on the younger generation, will also focus on the tremendous opportunities that new media brings.

This event offers an integrated experience of a traditional academic conference presenting recent research on topics like; new media; emerging literacies; the digital divide; new media as a platform for democracy in the lives of young people etc.

The conference will also engage the participation of Youth through showcasing an exhibition of youth media across all platforms. Youth groups from North and South will be invited to participate. The Conference will provide a unique opportunity to experience youth media culture as it is being created.

Irish Youth and Media Development first collaborated in attending the World Summit on Media For Children, held in Johannesburg, South Africa last year. www.5wsmc.com The Summit was attended by 1000 delegates from over 90 countries and 300 youth delegates.

The Irish delegation was a 32 county affair. It was brought together by RTE producer Marion Creely who was a member of the International Advisory group to the Summit and works with international children’s documentary makers . The group included youth and media workers from Kildare Youth television (KYTV), the Dán project in Fatima Mansions, the Base, Ballyfermot, Jan Pettersen, lecturer in media at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Paula Hicks of TCD Informatics department, and Prof Máire Messenger Davies, Director of the Centre for Media Research of Ulster University.

The Summit raised many issues and ideas which this group believes should be explored here in Ireland. There is a vibrant youth media scene in Ireland, but adults, including academics in our media colleges and established media, are unfamiliar with this. The Conference will be an attempt to bring these groups together and find ways to improve media literacy in Ireland, stimulate the use of media for consciousness raising among youth on democracy, active citizenship, integration and intercultural dialogue.
