Call for Papers
Youth Media Democracy;
A conference exploring Media and ICT as Tools for Youth Empowerment’
Dublin Institute of Technology

18th – 19th April 2008

Proposals for papers are invited from Irish and International academics, researchers, and postgraduate students. Papers are limited to 20 minutes and workshops are expected to last for 40 minutes. We also encourage the participation of representatives of the media industry, NGO’s and the voluntary and community sector. In order to meet targets in terms of programme focus, papers should be submitted under the topics of:

  1. Media literacy, competencies and challenges: Media and ICT as new literacies in the lives of young people; issues include:
    • access and social exclusion
    • differences in competence, cognitive aspects
    • Irish and Northern Irish aspects
    • Critical media literacy, media education and new skill-sets
    • Youth ICT initiatives: bridging digital divides or widening social gaps?
    • New media and ICT in young people’s lives: the research challenges
    • Other issues under this strand is also encouraged
  2. Youth in media – the image of youth as projected in media
    • Young people online: balancing risks and opportunities
    • How are youth portrayed or represented
    • How youth exert influence over the way they are presented using media
  3. Media as a tool for promoting integration, tolerance and peace versus media as social problem; issues include
    • human rights issues and the international dimension
    • cross-border studies – improving understanding in Northern and Southern Ireland
    • new media as a social problem – issues of regulating the internet and other media to ‘protect’ young people
    • Other issues under this strand is also encouraged
  4. Youth and child participation – how new media enables young people to participate in democratic processes; young people as audiences
    • Youth empowerment?
    • Defining the audience; who’s watching?
